Timing

The Self-Reliant Diver course is for experienced divers who want to learn how to dive responsibly. if necessary even without a partner; with the right training, equipment and, above all, the right attitude. Solo diving is not for everyone and not for every situation , but it can be appropriate. When you learn self-reliant techniques, you build skills and self-confidence also when you dive with a partner or as part of a team: you are more stable, more proactive and more ready to act.

What will you learn?

The core of the course is to learn how to replace the things you would normally do with a partner. The focus is on:

  • dive planning and gas consumption calculations (SAC)
  • redundancy : how do you build backups into a survival system?
  • independent emergency management and action models when help is not nearby

In-water training (3 training dives)

During three self-reliant training dives, you will train, among other things:

  • gas consumption swimming (data collection for later calculation)
  • switching to a redundant gas source in a simulated emergency situation
  • swimming without a mask
  • navigation to multiple points, including the exit point
  • Using DSMB (buoy sending and surface marking)

Standard

  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • at least 18 years
  • at least 100 logged dives
  • in addition you do skill assessment With a Self-Reliant Diver instructor before starting the course

Equipment

In addition to the basic equipment, you will need:

  • DSMB (buoy)
  • redundant gas source (stage)
  • backup dive computer (redundant dive computer)
  • backup surface signaling device (redundant surface signaling device)

The trainer will help you choose a suitable package and ensure that the setup is appropriate and safe for the purpose.

Who is this suitable for?

  • For the experienced diver who wants to learn the concept of self-guided diving responsibly and systematically
  • For those of you who want more certainty also with a partner/team: better planning, redundancy and problem solving
  • For those of you who have the patience and mental discipline to follow procedures – cool head, clear plan
  • Especially good if you dive in destinations you want to be in confident in your own performance in all basic procedures
